Samuel wasn't a rookie. He'd been hearing from God for decades — and he's wrong inside of one verse. He looks at Eliab and thinks surely. He didn't ask. He announced.

And watch what God corrects him on: don't consider his appearance or his height. Why height? Go back seven chapters. The one physical thing the text ever tells you about Saul is that he was a head taller than anybody in Israel.

Samuel was still grieving how the tall impressive one turned out — walked into a new house, saw a tall impressive one, and ran it right back.

God wasn't correcting his taste. He was showing him his pattern.
