Don’t Lose Yourself

Sep 17, 2026    Rev. Austin J. Young

Nobody loses themselves all at once. There's no morning you wake up and hand over your whole personality. It goes one small yes at a time — you skip a thing you had planned, you let a comment about your family go, you stop mentioning what you're working on because last time they got quiet. Every one of those is a small, generous thing a person in love does. And then one day you go looking for yourself and there isn't much there.

When an official delegation came out to the wilderness to ask John the Baptist who he was, they weren't curious — they said so themselves. They needed to file a report. They came with a script and three roles he could have stepped into, each one bigger than the last. He turned down all three before he ever said what he was.

This episode is about holding onto yourself inside a relationship: practicing your no, refusing to be somebody's everything, knowing what belongs to you — and the difference between sacrifice and erosion, which look identical from the outside and are not the same thing at all.

The question: Who am I when nobody is watching me be somebody's partner?
