WEEK 1 — Where Fear Got In | Genesis 3:8–13

Title: Where Fear Got In | Genesis 3 | Three Hounds of Hell: Fear

Fear was not in the original design. It got in — and the first thing it did was make us hide.

In this study we go back to the first time the word "afraid" shows up in the Bible. Adam heard a sound he had heard a hundred times before, and this time it sent him into the bushes. Nothing about God had changed. Something had changed in him.

We walk through:

Why the sound in the garden was familiar, not frightening

The first "afraid" in scripture — and what got in

Fear's first move is always to hide

God's question: Where are you?

God's second question: Who told you? — how fear gives you a new narrator

Fear hides, and then fear points

This week's practice: Answer God's two questions out loud. Where are you? and Who told you that?

Part of Three Hounds of Hell, a study series inspired by Howard Thurman's Jesus and the Disinherited — naming fear, deception, and hatred as the three forces that hunt the disinherited, and asking what the religion of Jesus actually says back.
