Week 1: Sitting By the River - Bible Study
SONGS IN A STRANGE LAND · Week 1 of 9 Sitting by the River — Psalm 137
The church has been editing Psalm 137 for two thousand years. We sing the first half. We pretend the second half isn't there. This week, we read the whole thing.
Before God's people learned how to sing in a strange land, they had to sit down and weep. The exiles by the rivers of Babylon teach us that grief isn't the opposite of faith — grief is faith refusing to lie about what hurts.
In this opening lesson of our summer Bible study, Rev. Austin J. Young walks us through three movements every faithful person eventually has to make:
- Sit down before you sing
- Don't let me forget what I almost lost
- Hand it to God, don't hold it yourself
If your life right now feels unfamiliar — if the season, the relationship, the country, or even your own body doesn't feel like home — this lesson was written for you.
📖 Read Psalm 137 before you watch — all nine verses, out loud if you can.
